'You don't need to be a "person of influence" to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they've taught me'.
Your ability to influence rides on your agility. Your:
- Insight into the situation, yourself, and others.
- Ability to navigate across various influencing styles, cogitative, social, emotional or even the darker manipulative styles.
- Appropriate use these styles and your influencing skills to achieve the desired outcomes.
Your credibility is judged on your integrity as you set about ‘influencing’ outcomes. Does your credibility hold it’s own when influencing situations or does it become fractured?
Often you hear the words Influence and Negotiation strung together. And yes, negotiation has its role. I prefer the expression, Influence and Motivation. To me it shifts from positional bargaining. It talks to having insights to others and their needs and taking them on a journey.
It does not assume that everyone will be happy or that there is win - win. Far from it! It can mean understanding the worst case scenario and the options in between and identifying the needs required in the different circumstances while respecting and valuing the individual’s needs. They don’t necessarily need to like or agree with the outcome. However if they feel respected they may follow you on the journey.
Maya Angelou summed this up beautifully in the following quote.
'I have learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will remember how you made them feel'.
And closer to home, my brother keeps telling me:
'Attention is currency. Attention is currency'.
