Finding your space

Think about your favourite song from your final year of high school. Or perhaps the music you play on a Friday night when you open a bottle of red and sit down and relax. (If you cannot recall any song because you are tied up in your head, refer to the bottom of this page).

For most of you the chances are you have leant back in your seat and slightly tilted your head back and to the left as you recall your music. Already your body has relaxed a little.

Music can change your physicality. This shows the incredible the power we have to tap into our body and change our physical state. In our busy world the challenge is remembering to do it frequently and especially when we need to.

So here’s a challenge.

Think about something that steals a lot of your time and replace it with ‘your music’ time.

Create a playlist. Create several. If you like them enough send them to me. I would love to see them.

So here are two of mine:

  • The Forget-about-it mix, for when I need to let things go
  • The Get-me-out-of-the-city/Thank-God-its-Friday mix. Well… the name says it all.

The Forget-about-it mix:

This is when I need to change my mood Especially when I am annoyed with someone or a situation. I know that when I am tired and annoyed I can start to fixate on someone, whether they deserve it or not. Even if they do deserve it I need to Forget-about-it, because the only person I am upsetting is me.

So here it is:

We kick of with Talking heads - ‘On The Road To Nowhere’.

I love the music, it is upbeat, it starts to change my state, I find myself singing before I realise it.

It is hard to hold tension in your jaw when you are singing. The words are peppered with irony (the future is certain, give us time to work it out). It gets me thinking that if I continue my thinking I will miss out on seeing what’s important (the bigger picture) and or influencing and creating my own outcomes.

I move on to Kylie. Yes Kylie Minogue - ‘Did It Again’. The whole song talks to me.

Clever girl

Think you are but you think too much

Shut down turn around

Don’t look that way any more

Clever girl

Think you know but you don’t know much

Try to make a move

Go to a different door

You know it’s all in your head

You better put that business to bed

By your fair hands of design you met with

The monster in your mind

You did it again

You did it again

Won’t you listen to me when I’m telling you it’s no good for you?

The last song on this play list is Robbie Williams - ‘Let love Be Your Energy’.

By the time I have moved on to Robbie, I have had Talking heads and Kylie on replay for a while. How long a while is will depend on how pissed off I am.

So, Robbie gives me energy, and this reflects how I want to live in this world.

If you are willing to change the world let love be your energy.

I got more than I need when your love shines down on me.

The Get-me-out-of-the-city/Thank-God-it’s Friday mix:

To put it in context, if I am in my car by 3.30 to 4.00pm on Friday I will be home in between 11 to 15minutes. If I leave any time after chances are it could take me up to an hour to get home.

So, this mix, the Get-me-out-of-the-city/Thank-God-its-Friday mix is designed to get me into a really happy, joyous, let my hair down, fun mood.

We kick of with; ‘Get Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. It is such a joyous song. I use to check into my ‘me’ time.

Here come bad news talking this and that, yeah

Well, give me all you got, and don't hold it back, yeah

Well, I should probably warn you I'll be just fine, yeah,

No offense to you, don't waste your time

Here's why

So in a way the above words represent what I need to put out of my head. It is easy to continue to think about work, clients stories, what I need to do next week or the Oh shit I forgot to do… before I left - Bugger. You know the feeling. If I keep thinking about this I don’t check into my own space and my family and friends I am hanging out with on the weekend.

Bring me down

Can't nothing

Bring me down

My level's too high

Bring me down

Can't nothing

Bring me down

I said (let me tell you now)

Bring me down

Can't nothing

Bring me down

My level's too high

Bring me down

Can't nothing

Bring me down

I said

Truthfully, almost nothing can bring me down. However if something is seating in my head this reminds me to swap it out as it is ‘me’ time.

Because I'm happy

Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof

Because I'm happy

Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth

Because I'm happy

Clap along if you know what happiness is to you

Because I'm happy

Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do

The official video for get happy is here.

Also this is a brilliant video of the same song, you have to watch this!

‘Play that Funky Music’ - Wild Cherry.

I don’t think about the words much I simple start to switch off and enjoy the mood.

Play that funky music white boy

Play that funky music right

Play that funky music white boy

Lay down the boogie and play that funky music till you die

Till you die

Oh' till you die

Can you hear that song in your head now? Sorry, it might kick around there for a while. Feel free to blame me if you cannot get it out of your head. That is the power of music and it goes to show, that the right music kicking around in there for a while will influence your state.

‘Moves Like Jagger’ - Maroon 5 featuring Cristina Aguilera.Again very much along the lines of the above song, I don’t think about the words much. Truthfully, I referred to the lyrics as I wrote this blog and once I read them I seriously thought about not including them in this posting.  However I love this tune and if I want to take something away from the lyrics, it is good to let go of control every now and again (within reason).

So what music talks to you? What is your Friday night drive home/ride music? Below is a link to a top 200 requested songs page. The link is from a friend who has a band that does events, weddings and the like. This is a live link and constantly being updated based on the music he is requested to provide for party.  Have fun.
